Blogging for LGBT Families Day:
Hi, I'm a new-comer to the "Blogging for LGBT Families Day" event and blogging in general, but as the meaning behind this event is very important to me I thought I should give it a try. I'm 26 years-old and have recently started a company, Goo Goo Gay Gay, that offers clothing to LGBT family and friends. I believe strongly in supporting diverse, happy families. I know firsthand it makes a difference to have a supporting family, and for those who don't have supporting families, I believe it is imperative to have a supporting community. This is the main reason why I wanted to write today and share my experiences. With the recent decision by the California State Supreme Court it seems more and more possible that this "community" is getting stronger and building momentum across diverse political, economic, and social avenues. I had the opportunity to attend the hearing with my sister and heard various speakers including San Francisco Chief Deputy Attorney Therese Stewart and Plaintiff Lawer Shannon Minter. One argument mentioned during the hearing that really stuck was the belief that by calling marriage between same-sex couples, "marriage" you were giving these couples access to the same language and norms that the majority of humankind use to define their relationships. No doubt there has been a day when a 2-mom family brought their child to school for the first time and had to explain they were both the parents - a time when a 2-dad home had a birthday party for their son or daughter and had to explain they both are the dads. Equipped with this word we are in a better position to express the strength of our relationships with our teachers, coaches, co-workers, and other community members. So thank you to the California State Supreme Court for making this decision and thank you to the community of activists and supporters that have fought for this for so long!
Sincerely,
Erin Wilson
